What is a Live Video Class?

webexLive Video Classes are free classes given by Market Street Fellowship over the internet. We are currently using an internet-based web conferencing software called WebEx to host our classes. Unlike other programs, WebEx allows a large number of individual computers to remotely participate in our classes. You DO NOT need to download a program. You DO NOT need to learn any new software. You DO NOT even need a camera to participate, unless you want to be seen by the rest of the group. You simply need to "Join" the class once it is in session. Below are some simple instructions how to do this.

headsetIf you are participating in the class by yourself, it is ideal to have a headset. Headsets provide the greatest quality of sound, and also prevent the common problem of feedback that happens when computer microphones pick up and recycle sound from the speakers. If you don't have a headset, don't worry. You can still participate in the class by using speakers with a built-in microphone. Once your headset or speakers are plugged in, make sure your speaker/headset output volume is turned up and your microphone is unmuted. Audio settings for your computer can usually be accessed by clicking the little bell icon on your taskbar.

How to join a class?

joinOnce you click the link on the top if this page, it will take you to a page where you can join any active video class. Simply click the join icon (as seen in this picture). When you have clicked join, you will be asked for your name, email address, and the password to enter the conference. Our password is always 1234.

volpWhen you have entered the secret password, you will enter the conference center and should be asked if you want to participate in an "integrated VolP session". You need to click the 'yes' button, as this will allow you to both hear from and speak to the other participants. If for any reason you are not asked to join the VolP session, you may need to to the audio tab at the top of the screen, and select this option manually.

Participating in a Class

unmuteAfter clicking the 'yes' button, you should see this box appear somewhere on your screen asking you if you want to unmute your microphone and speakers. You should uncheck both of the boxes next to speaker and microphone, and make sure that you can hear and be heard. After you have checked these settings, you are free to mute your microphone again if you do not want to be heard. But first make sure that it is functioning properly in case you want to participate with questions or comments later on in the class.

playOn the bottom right of your screen, you should see some small square video screens where the faces of participants will appear during the class. With this program only videos can be seen at one time, even though there can be many more than six participating. The host of the conference can choose which videos to display. You will also see YOUR small video square as well. In order to start broadcasting your video so that others can see it, you need to press the small green triangle (shown in picture) underneath the picture. When you click the triangle we will all be able to see you.

Trouble shooting...

I still can't hear anything! - Do you have speakers on your computer?...or a headset? Are you sure that your speakers are plugged in and turned up? Have you unmuted the session as shown above?

My video doesn't seem to be working! - Do you have a camera? Have you clicked the green triangle shown above? Is your camera being used by another program on your computer right now? If so, log off, close the other program, and log back on. Your computer should recognize your camera when you return to the conference.

The audio keeps cutting out! - This is probably a bandwidth problem. In other words, you might have a slow connection, or your connection is being is also currently being used to do something else. Do you have a teenager upstairs that is downloading movies? Are you trying to listen to the class while surfing the web?

I have a camera, but not a microphone. - That's O.K. You can still participate in the class. You will be able to see us, hear us, and we can hear you. But if you have questions or comments you will have to use the chat box that is above the videos in the conference center.
